ArgiTein for the early stages of skin breakdown (PDCAAS 100)
Light and refreshing cherry flavor
Description: ArgiTein™ is a cherry flavored instant sugar free protein and amino acid nutritional supplement. When mixed as directed, each 6-8 oz serving provides 5 grams of Whey Protein Isolate and 4.5 grams of arginine yielding a nitrogen equivalence to 14 grams of protein intake.
Overview:
- It is well documented that sufficient protein is necessary for wound healing due to the increased overall protein need for tissue regeneration and repair. Whey Protein Isolate is the highest biological protein available and has been shown to promote skin health, wound healing, improved immune function, reduced oxidative stress and increased muscle strength. Whey is rich in the amino acid cysteine and as such has been shown to promote increased glutathione synthesis. Glutathione, an important intracellular antioxidant and hepatic detoxifier, acts to reduce cellular damage from oxidative stress.
- Arginine is a conditionally indispensable amino acid, meaning most of the time it can be manufactured by the human body, and does not need to be obtained directly through the diet. However, under certain conditions, arginine becomes an essentail amino acid and must be obtained directly through the diet. The biosynthetic pathway does not produce sufficient arginine during periods of metabolic stress such as infection, acute illness, trauma, burns, pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, malnutrition, surgery, and wounds. # Additionally, the body's ability to synthesize nonessential amino acids and to utilize all amino acids, can be adversely affected by an individual's advancing age, overall health, organ health, compromised nutrient absorption capacity, and imbalances of other nutrients.
Food sources of arginine: Dairy products, beef, pork, gelatin , poultry, seafood, wheat germ and flour, buckwheat, granola, oatmeal, peanuts, nuts, chick peas, and cooked soybeans
Key arginine functions:
- Boosts Immune Function: Arginine stimulates the thymus and promotes lymphocyte (immune cells) production required to promote healing of burns and other wounds.
- Adequate tissue arginine is essential for efficient wound repair:
- Arginine supplementation has been shown to increase collagen deposition and protein accumulation in elderly patients who sustained an experimental surgical wound.
- Arginine is a precursor for the synthesis of nitric oxide which stimulates macrophage activity and acts as a vasodialtor, increasing wound and gut profusion. Diabetes is associated with low nitric oxide levels and supplemental arginine has been shown to correct impaired diabetic wound healing by restoring wound nitric oxide synthesis.
- Supplemental arginine (6g/day), is effective in potentiating surgical angiogenesis in humans.
- Modulator of Inflammation: Arginine is involved in the production of a variety of enzymes and hormones which regulate insulin production, promote increased lean body mass and strengthen the immune system.
Indications & Dosing: ArgiTein, 1-3 servings per day with a maximum of 4 servings per day, is typically used for, but not limited to:
- Stage I & II Pressure Ulcer with minimum or no drainage: ArgiTein 1-2 servings per day
- Ulcers: ArgiTein 2 servings per day
- Surgical Wounds with minimum drainage: ArgiTein 2-3 servings per day
- Surgical Support Program:
- Pre-operative Regimen: 7 days prior to surgery, stop all usual vitamin and mineral supplements. Start ArgiTein 1 serving per day and VitaMent 1 serving per day. The last doses should be 24 hours before surgery.
- Post Operative Regimen: After surgery and when cleared to start eating, start ArgiTein 2 servings per day and VitaMent 1 serving per day for 2-4 weeks after surgery. Once completed, continue taking usual vitamin and mineral supplements.
